English Language Learningat Xplore

Learning or improving a language with Xplore is different.

Our philosophy places language development at the heart of what we do and offer. Our students’ experience is essential to the success of our programmes, we are absolutely dedicated to providing the very best TEFL provision in order to achieve this.

We have the same excellent standard of language provision across all of our centres, therefore we can guarantee that no matter which programme, you can be assured of the high language standards.

Students who study with Xplore will see an improvement in their knowledge, comfort, confidence and ease of using English. This is achieved through our full immersion culture that ensures each student is able to read, write, listen to and speak English in and out of the classroom, with natural opportunities to practice around every corner.

Our Method for Teaching English as a second language

Our TEFL method is one of natural acquisition, sure to support every student, no matter their nationality, age or level of confidence; easing them into a natural and normal way of communicating in English.

By relying on the authenticity of the tasks we present our learners to embark on, we are teaching them to begin being comfortable in taking linguistic risks and gaining a firm grasp on the language, in a natural way.

We use different teaching approaches appropriate to the age range and ability level of younger students, creating a learning environment where the focus is on having fun and interaction which gives our students the confidence to grow and improve.

Every summer camp suitable for younger learners also offers a wide range of exciting activities such as quad biking, archery and climbing as well as typical evening activities such as singing around the campfire and roasting marshmallows.

Interactive – we make learning a language fun with games and music to encourage younger students to participate

Images – we start with matching words with their images, especially helpful for the youngest students or those with limited language abilities

Repetition – we design our lessons to repeat, develop and repeat topics to maximise retention for young learners

Pronunciation – in every lesson, activity and free time, our focus is on correctly pronouncing words and sounds

Language ability levels of older students can differ greatly between the ages of 13 and 17, some can be greatly advanced whilst others benefit from a supportive environment to develop their skills, others are looking to gain a qualification in order to continue studies at home whilst some students want to put their skills to test with challenging immersion.

For those reasons, we use different teaching approaches suitable to age range and ability level in order to create the best learning environment for each student, such as.

Cultural – lessons include cultural customs and typical etiquette to enhance experience

Grammar – time spent looking at sentence structure and tenses

Social Confidence – strong focus on oral participation, using language in front of others

Projects – self-study, group project work and community projects to suit all learner styles

Academic approach – examination preparation for those wanting to gain a qualification

Our Syllabus

Our Director of Studies has formulated our interactive and modern style of language learning syllabus to exactly fit the needs of Xplore students participating in our Summer Language Camps and Group Residential Mini-stays.

The majority of our English language course allows students to learn and develop through interactive language classes, supported by activities outside of the classroom. After students are graded from their test on arrival, our teachers will make an initial assessment to ensure they are in the correct class.

It is fundamental for each student to be placed in the correct class and level based on their present ability and to support their development. Students will then study English through many topics and subjects and while we are aware of the importance of grammar and function of the language, we are basing our syllabus on communicative and interactive lessons for the students. They will be able to exercise their English in debates, through role play and using their imagination.

Students can sit an Ofqual approved exam through Anglia Examinations at the end of their course.

Our Teachers

Across all our destinations, our teachers are vibrant, engaging and experienced.

We have gone to great lengths to ensure that as well as their own TEFL qualification, all of our teachers have received the same training in our TEFL methods, our philosophy and our ethos.

Every Xplore teacher is supported by an Academic Manager and our Diploma qualified, Director of Studies.

Anglia Examinations and CEFR

For those wishing to complete their TEFL course with a formal examination and certification, at Xplore we provide the option of taking an ‘Anglia Examination’ at the end of the programme. Anglia Examinations operates worldwide, are internationally recognised and comparable against other EFL examination bodies such as Cambridge, TOEFL and IELTS using the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR).

Our syllabus is based on the Common European Framework Reference (CEFR) and we work at those levels in the classroom. In this way we can ensure that each student can understand the tasks and contexts, but by the same token be stretched. Each of our teachers are trained on the CEFR, ensuring that all of the students are constantly monitored and can be rearranged in level or class, if that should be deemed necessary.

Through their partnership with AIM, Anglia will award an Ofqual approved certificate to all those achieving a pass grade or higher for B1, B2, C1 and C2 levels.
