High School Programmes:Academic Year & Semester Placements

Our Academic Year & Semester Placements are targeted towards high school students looking for a long-term study abroad placement that offer flexibility in subject and location. So that is why we call our high school placements, Xplore MyChoice.

“MyChoice” offers quality high school placements to students aged between 12 and 18 looking to complete a year or semester placement in an authentic language environment. But what sets us apart is the level of control high school students have on the where and what they wish to study across the study destinations we have on offer.

Select Schools and Student Support

Each MyChoice team selects every school that we place students in because of their range of subjects offered and the supportive community in which they operate.

Our best practice is to have well-prepared high school students, so this involves sharing host family details, community information and school profiles with our agents and students prior to the placement.

We also offer students the opportunity to meet others who are in the same situation during an ‘arrival orientation’ or ‘soft-landing’ camp. Our local teams continue to provide round the clock support for the duration of students’ academic year & semester placement; regularly submitting progress reports.

Hear from one of our students…

I felt demotivated at school and I wanted to try something new and experience other things. School is different in the UK, my teachers lecture in Norway, they don’t teach the same way as English teachers do. In the UK, teachers want you to be more involved and active in your learning whereas at home they will just talk at you. It is more innovative here.

Xplore Guardianship

Xplore (Klub Group Ltd) occupies the function of legal guardian for all high school students on a MyChoice placement. As guardian, Xplore acts on behalf of a student’s natural parent(s) or legal carer(s) and has parental powers.

In England, it is a legal requirement that all international high school students on an academic year or semester placement must have a guardian residing in England, therefore Xplore fulfils this function for all students embarking on one of the 3 placement programmes offered in England.

Academic Year & Semester Placements Requirements

As this academic programme is so sought after, it is important to us that high school students who apply are academically focused and committed to furthering their educational career. It is for this reason that we have in place our ‘General Acceptance Guidelines’ that we use to select students before going through the more specific application process.

Acceptance Guidelines

Each applicant must at least demonstrate the following:

  • Have strong identifiable and attainable academic goals for the future.
  • Adequate proficiency in English language, scoring a minimum ‘intermediate’ level with a SLEP-test score of minimum 50. For the UK, we can accept other recognised English language tests, such as; Junior TOEFL, ELTis or Anglia.
  • A genuine interest in living and studying in a different country
  • A level of personal maturity that leads us to believe that they are ready for the intensity of the programme.
  • Strong motivation and open mindedness to immersing in a new culture, climate and expectations.

How to apply for a high school abroad

We provide our MyChoice Academic Year & Semester Placements through a number of select agent partners across the globe. Our agents act as the communication pathway between us at Xplore organising the high school placements and the student and their family. Whilst Xplore organises the school placement based on the student’s requirements, we also work hard to recruit a network of local host families and process all the relevant legal administration that is involved as a student guardian.

Xplore Host Families

We welcome different types of families to become an Xplore host family, however the personal qualities we seek are very specific and absolutely mandatory.

We ensure our host families possess the right attributes to ensure a caring, supportive and positive environment, because they contribute a huge role in the experience our high school students have whilst on their academic placement.

All families go through a rigorous application and observation process, including face-to-face interviews with family members and references from their community. We look for families who are friendly, encouraging, adaptable, motivated and enthusiastic about sharing their culture, community and home.
